Ryan Luther commits to Arizona

The former Pitt forward solidified his transfer plans Wednesday night

After initially requesting his release from Pitt on March 16, forward Ryan Luther has committed to Arizona as a graduate transfer, according to Evan Daniels of 247Sports.

Luther began weighing his options shortly after the firing of former Pitt head coach Kevin Stallings on March 8, and he made an official visit to Arizona over the weekend.

“I think I have a good relationship with Coach [Sean] Miller,” Luther said, per Daniels. “He came out and saw me, and on the visit, I got to know him better and the staff. Hanging with the players, I thought they were great guys. I got a good feel for the guys, and I enjoyed being with them. I got along with them. They said [Miller] really wants me.”

The 6’9” forward previously expressed his disappointment with Pitt’s decision to fire Stallings in a written statement issued via Twitter two days after the news of his coach’s dismissal broke.

Given Luther’s previous statement, the interest he drew from high-major programs, and the fact that he didn’t publicly react to the Jeff Capel hire like many of his Pitt teammates did, it’s unsurprising that he decided to move on to a team more likely to immediately contend.

During his final season with Pitt, Luther averaged 12.7 points, 10.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.6 steals per game. He’s also made 41.5 percent of his three-point attempts over four seasons.

Luther is the third player to commit to Arizona this month, as four-star 2018 recruits Devonaire Doutrive and Omar Thielemans joined the Wildcats on April 7 and April 15, respectively.
