1) Derwin James, Florida State

Derwin James may not only be the best player on a talented FSU team, he may be the best player in a conference with the defending Heisman Trophy winner. There are people that think he could be the best player at any position in the entire country. A gifted athlete – James is a certain first round NFL pick if he can stay healthy.

2) Quin Blanding, Virginia

Virginia’s Quin Blanding has had a great career with 356 total tackles. The former 5-Star recruit has lived up to the hype in his first 3 years. He’s a pre-season All-American pick, and is another likely 1st round safety from the ACC.

3) Jordan Whitehead, Pittsburgh

Jordan Whitehead could be a darkhorse All-American candidate this year. He is that talented. As a freshman in 2015, he was the ACC defensive rookie of the year. Last year he was 2nd-Team All-ACC, even as missed 3 games with injury.

4) Jessie Bates III, Wake Forest

The best young safety in the ACC could be Jessie Bates III. In his RS-Freshman year he had 100 tackles and 5 interceptions. The rangy player was a 2nd-Team All-ACC player last season and his future is very bright.

5) Terrell Edmunds, Virginia Tech

As part of a solid defensive back 7 at Virginia Tech, Terrell Edmunds had 89 tackles last year to go along with 4 interceptions. He was an honorable mention All-ACC player in 2016. Look for him to be at least 2nd-Team All-ACC this year.
