Pitt faced Maryland in a closed scrimmage at an undisclosed location over the weekend, and while information about such events is scant by nature, Jeff Goodman of Stadium provided details on the outcome in addition to some notable individual statistics from the matchup.

The scrimmage, which was played on Saturday, resulted in an 84-75 Maryland win. Pitt guard Trey McGowens led all scorers with 29 points to go with six assists, according to Goodman's report. Second on the team in scoring was incoming freshman Gerald Drumgoole Jr., who had 17 points and seven boards.

Maryland was led by Jalen Smith, a 6’10” power forward who was recently placed on the Karl Malone Award watch list. Smith amassed 20 points and 10 rebounds and made three of his four shots from beyond the arc. In addition, the Baltimore native is one of the young standouts on a Terrapins team that is coming off an NCAA tournament appearance and is expected to enter the season ranked.

What is unclear from the bits of news that have trickled out about the matchup is how Pitt's Xavier Johnson, Ryan Murphy, Terrell Brown and other key players performed. While that may not be revealed, what is known is that McGowens and Drumgoole, two players Pitt will likely rely on heavily in the coming months, both appear ready for the 2019-20 season.

Pitt will take the court again on Oct. 30 for an exhibition game with Slippery Rock, and the team will kick off its season on Nov. 6 in an ACC matchup with Florida State.
