Shaquille Doorson becomes the third commitment for Pitt in the 2014 recruiting class
Whoa, Pitt just landed their third basketball commitment for the 2014 season, and it comes as quite a surprise. 6-11 Shaquille Doorson, a native of the Netherlands has committed and signed to play for Jamie Dixon next year. Doorson is a member of the Canaris Basketball Academy, a prestigious basketball factory in Europe. Doorson comes in as a virtual unknown, but has the size and obviously the ability to compete in the ACC. He has not been mentioned all along throughout the recruiting process. but clearly did enough to warrant an offer from Pitt.
If this scenario sounds familiar, Pitt landed a relatively unknown Center from New Zealand a few years back, and we all know how that worked out for both parties. Steven Adams ascended up the charts as a true freshman, and made himself Pitt's first NBA lottery pick under Jamie Dixon. There is no telling if Doorson is on that same level, but Pitt is not the only team to go sniffing around the CBA this year. Louisville also plucked a 7-2 Center from Europe that plays in the same program.
Here is a quick preview on Doorson, and as you can see, he is every bit of his listed 6-11 265 pounds. Doorson will come in, and quickly compete with Joe Uchebo for minutes at the center position. Doorson joins Ryan Luther and Sheldon Jeter as the commitments for next year's class. The noticeable thing with all three players is their size, as Luther and Jeter both run 6-8, and Doorson 6-11.
This should mark the end of the 2014 recruiting class, assuming Detrick Mostella does in fact join the team this year. Pitt may have missed out on some prospects early, but some thought Dixon and Barry Rohrssen may have had a trick up their sleeve. Again, until more comes out on this guy, we will not know if he is a complete project or a legitimate star. Either way, Pitt is remaining a player for in international recruiting, and that is a good thing.
