Mason Mount is one of the most popular and important players for both the Chelsea Football Club and England National Football Team.  It is accurate to say that Mount has had really astounding results in the last few years. Chelsea’s number 19 won the most prestigious Champions League and was named in the Champions League team of the season. He was arguably Chelsea’s best player of the season as well.

Turning only 23 on Monday, it is crystal clear that Mason has a huge amount of developing potential and time as well.  Chelsea fans and experts have no doubt that with all the skills and talent this player has, he can in fact become a Chelsea legend like Frank Lampard or Didier Drogba.

But Mounts’s future wasn’t as clear and bright as it is now. He was a good player in his early years, singing for Chelsea at the age of six. The player was showing special ability every time he stepped on a pitch.  In his teenage years, it was evident that he would have a good career in football. But the major problem was that Mason wasn’t the only talented player in the academy. He was surrounded by other quality players and because of this circumstance, it wasn’t all clear about his future career. His playing time was diminishing as he was amongst many talented midfielders.

This wasn’t the only problem for Mason’s career in Chelsea. The club rarely signs academy players, instead sending them on loan to other clubs until their 20’s before eventually deciding about their future.

Mount decided to stay at Chelsea and scored 10 goals in 30 games in the 2016-17 season for Chelsea in the club’s U18 league. Eventually, Chelsea won the season, and Mason was named academy player of the year. Then he accepted to join football club Vitesse on loan. This was a very risky and skeptical decision because practice showed that only very few players managed to return to Chelsea’s first team after going to Vitesse.

Mason joined the Vitesse and had a tremendous season as he would play 32 games and score 13 goals, one hat-trick, and nine assists. He was named Vitesse’s player of the year in that season.

One of the best players in Chelsea history, Frank Lampard was the coach of Derby County at the time. He requested to bring him to his new side and Mount accepted. This really was a defining year for Mason. After having a marvelous season in Vitesse, and grabbing the attention of many top teams, he had a big opportunity to show his true potential. He adapted to the new team almost instantly. Mason had an unfortunate injury that set him back for six weeks, but he returned in phenomenal fashion-scoring eight goals and adding five assists. Even though he did not help his team to gain the promotion, Mount’s individual season was spectacular.

Finally, in 2019 he joined the main squad of Chelsea after Lampard became the new manager of Chelsea. Lampard’s campaign wasn’t successful as he was sacked after finishing 4th in his first season and having a rough start in the next one. When new German manager Thomas Tuchel took control of the team, it was not clear if Mount would still be Chelsea’s main squad player.  But eventually, it went the other way. Mount’s performance level elevated and he really became one of the best players for Chelsea. Mason started in the main squad in the champions league final, gave an important assist to his teammate Kai Havertz who scored the only and decisive goal in the match and  Chelsea beat man city 1-0.   In the summer of 2020, he was in the main squad of the England national football team. His team went to the finals and lost to Italy in penalty shootouts.

At the age of 23, Mount has achieved big success as he won the most important European trophy and showed great skills on an individual level. He is a hardworking, productive, and progressive player that makes every Chelsea fan excited about him.
