While there is basically radio silence coming from Duke on the nature of Ryan Kelly’s injury, his progress in recovering from it and a timetable for his return, there are bits of news coming out of interviews and media appearances by his teammates and coaches. Some of this is stretching it a bit, but with no actual news it’s all we have to go on.

Mason Plumlee used the word when not if when referring to Ryan Kelly’s return during media day interviews yesterday.

But the key question is whether Kelly returns — and if so, when will he be back on the court? Multiple sources told CBSSports.com that there is optimism within the program that he’ll get back prior to the end of this month, maybe even as soon as the middle of February.

“We’ve seen him without his air-sock cast on and doing a little more rehab,” Plumlee said. “But we don’t know when we’re going to have him back. I would hope we’d have him back by the end of the ACC season, but with these kind of injuries, you never really know.”

Duke’s upcoming schedule looks like this:

  1. February 7 vs NC State
  2. February 10 vs Boston College
  3. February 13 vs UNC
  4. February 16 vs Maryland
  5. February 21 vs Virginia Tech
  6. February 24 vs Boston College
  7. February 28 vs Virginia

If Kelly returns before March, as it sounds like he will, you’ll see him in action during one of those games for the first time since January 8 against Clemson.

Plumlee also joined ESPN’s Andy Katz to talk about his chances at the Wooden Award, the upcoming game against NC State and Ryan Kelly’s status.

Ryan is aggressively rehabbing. This is Ryan’s last year like it is mine so he’s doing everything he can to get back. here has been progress. He’s doing more now than he was a month ago. It’s one of those injuries where it just takes time to heal. I wouldn’t be surprised if we have him back by the end of the ACC season.

Coach K had less optimistic news on Kelly’s return in comments to ESPN’s Andy Katz:

Krzyzewski said there is still no timetable for the return of senior forward Ryan Kelly from a right-foot injury. Kelly hasn’t played since Jan. 8. “It’s almost been a month now and there is no new news,” said Krzyzewski. “He’s getting better but he still can’t do anything weight-bearing yet.”

In a tweet from the Duke Basketball coaches’ show on Monday, Steve Wiseman quoted Steve Wojciechowski as saying

This is another use of the word when, not if in referring to Kelly’s return. You can watch that show here:

The team is starting to find it’s identity and groove without Ryan on the court, but there’s no question he makes them one of the best teams in the country when he’s on the court.
