Capel added former Charleston assistant Milan Brown on Monday
Pitt men’s basketball coach Jeff Capel completed his coaching staff with the addition of former Charleston assistant Milan Brown on Monday, according to multiple reports. Brown filled the final spot on the Panthers staff after Jason Capel, Tim O’Toole, Brian Regan and Jason Richards were all brought aboard by the new head coach last week.
With the hire, Capel now has three former head coaches working under him as assistants, as Brown, Capel and O’Toole have 24 years of experience heading programs between them. More specifically, Brown coached Mount St. Mary’s and Holy Cross from 2003 to 2015, O’Toole coached Fairfield from 1998 to 2006, and Capel coached Appalachian State from 2010 to 2014.
Brown could be particularly helpful to Capel in his efforts to recruit the Mid-Atlantic, given his ties to D.C., Maryland and Virginia. From 1995 to 2010, he coached in various capacities at Old Dominion, Mount St. Mary’s and William & Mary. Prior to that, he played his college ball at Hampton after a standout high school career at Kecoughtan High School in Hampton, Virginia.
Charleston head coach Earl Grant broke down what Brown brought to the table as a member of his staff shortly after hiring him in July 2015.
“Milan has been very successful throughout his career as an assistant and ... as a head coach,” Grant said, according to Charleston’s The College Today. “He is a man of character, a great recruiter, is very energetic and has a phenomenal basketball mind. Milan will strengthen our recruiting presence in the Mid-Atlantic region, as well as assist in recruiting the South.”
During his introductory press conference, Capel said that the East Coast would be a priority in terms of recruiting, and between the Capel brothers, O’Toole and Brown, it seems Pitt should have the prowess and experience to land top recruits from Massachusetts down to Florida.
