Duke landed their first commitment for 2018 from an in-state prospect, giving them a nice piece early on for their recruiting class.

Gunnar Holmberg, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound quarterback from Heritage high school announced on social media that he would be making his commitment to the Blue Devils and Coach Cutcliffe, giving the Duke staff their first 2018 commit.

"First off I would like to thank my family especially my mom for helping me throughout the process.  Also to every other school that recruited me.  But after careful consideration I have made up my mind to commit to the school that recruited me first and believed in me first.  I can ask for nothing else in a school that will prepare me for my future in football and life.  So I am very excited to say I have committed to Duke University!"

So why did he choose the Blue Devils?

"They've been recruiting me for about a year now and it's always felt like home to me," he said.  "It's a school that I can ask nothing better from acadmeic and athletic wise.  They have the best coaches in the nation, who have had a huge impact on me so far and have always seemed to genuially care about me as a person more than a player or recruit.  So I just went ahead and pulled the trigger and committed with the mind set of nothing could be better for me."

Holmberg played in 10 games last season for Heritage, as he threw for 1,772 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.  He also ran for another 256 yards and four touchdowns.
