Duke beats UNC, advances to ACC Championship

An all too familiar headline when referring to the men’s basketball team, not so familiar when it comes to football.

With Duke’s victory over UNC 27-25 Saturday, they win the out right Coastal Division title, and have a chance to be ACC  Champion Cut carriedwith a win over FSU next Saturday. That will not be an easy task, and most believe FSU will win with ease, still the fact that the Blue Devils are even in this position after being picked to finish last in the division is remarkable.

Duke took on a very hot UNC team, and made the big plays when needed. Seemingly every time North Carolina made a play the Blue Devils had an answer.  After the Tar Heels went for 2 to go up 15-10, DeVon Edwards answered with a 99 yard kickoff return that ended with Duke up 17-15 at the half.

The Blue Devils jumped on UNC early in the 2nd half following a Kelby Brown interception. They took a 24-15 lead  on a 7-yard touchdown  pass from Anthony Boone to Jamison Crowder, their second hookup of the day. UNC would answer with a Marquise Wiliams pass to Quinshad Davis.

With the score at 24-22, the kicking game became the story of the 4th quarter. North Carolina’s Thomas Moore nailed a 37-yard field goal with 7:03 left and it looked like Duke might fade down the stretch. However, Ross Martin knocked home a 27- yard field goal after Duke ate up over 4 minutes of the clock to give Duke the 27 to 25 lead with just over two minutes remaining.

That proved to be the game winner, after DeVon Edwards came up with a huge interception with 13 seconds remaining to clinch the victory for the Blue Devils.

Ultimately Duke must know they have to play a perfect game next week. They did well today handling the UNC offense, but FSU will be the No. 1 ranked team in the country.  However, none of that matter Saturday night as the Blue Devils will enjoy their 2013 Coastal Division Championship before beginning preparations for Florida State Sunday night something head coach David Cutcliffe called an honor

“Got a big football game in Charlotte. We are honored to represent the Coastal Division. Got a lot of good football teams int he coastal division and we are very honored to be the representative in Charlotte,” Cutcliffe said.
