As I watched Miami crush Virginia Tech 30-6 Thursday evening, the more the game went on the more it reminded of a similar demise of a once great program. Back in 2006, the decline of Florida State was unmistakable.
There were whispers that legendary coach Bobby Bowden should be replaced. After Florida State suffered a humiliating 30-0 home loss to Wake Forest to drop to drop 5-5, you knew it was the beginning of the end for Bowden at FSU. There was going to be a complete overhaul of the program.
Now in 2014 Frank Beamer plays the role of Bobby Bowden. Bud Foster is Mickey Andrews. Virginia Tech was at home and they suffered their own embarrassing loss. A 4-3 Miami team came to Blacksburg on a Thursday night. Thursday night used to be owned by Virginia Tech. After 60 minutes Thursday the Hokies were routed in their own backyard 30-6, and all I could think of was that 2006 game for Florida State.
The Hokies Thursday were a shell of their once great program. Heck they didn’t even look like the team that won at Ohio State in September. Yes there are a ton injuries the Hokies are dealing with, but does Virginia Tech look like a team that’s a handful of players from contending for ACC titles?
That 2006 Florida State squad we’ve been drawing parallels too also beat a top 15 team on the road early in the season, when they defeated Miami. This all sounds too familiar.
I believe things are about to get ugly at Virginia Tech.
