Carey shines in Duke's Countdown to Craziness

Another Countdown to Craziness has come and gone and we'll once again place way too much importance on it. Sure they shot horribly and there were some turnovers and some sloppiness but it was to be expected.

The White team fell to the Blue 47-38 in the annual intrasquad scrimmage but the most important part of CTC is that it signals the start of the preseason and games against someone other than teammates.

It's going to take time for guys become not only comfortable under the lights of a bigger stage (the freshmen) but comfortable in their new roles. That being said Vernon Carey looks good, really good. For a guy who's 6'9 - 6'10, and pushing 270 he plays with a lot of control. Not a laboring big but ones who seems to run the floor and doesn't shy away from the whatever open shot comes his way. Again - just a scrimmage but these are traits we've seen in Vernon prior to the Blue-White game. Both he and Matthew Hurt made some smart basketball plays and seem to be ready and willing to set guys up.

Vernon Carey lead the way with 15 points, going 7-10 from the floor. Fellow freshmen Cassius Stanley and Wendell Moore both went 5-10 from the field scoring 12 and 11 points respectively while Alex O'Connell added 11 points - also going 5-10 from the field.

It almost feels silly to assess or to start assigning judgements on this team based on essentially a half of barely coached basketball so I'll do my best to not. I think if you were looking for answers well you came to the wrong place. I think if you were looking for last year's Duke team you came to the wrong place. It's likely just based on what we know about the team is that they could very easily take some lumps - that's not based on tonight but based on the amount of talent they lost from last year's squad and the fact that there is undoubtedly a talent disparity from last year to this one. It doesn't mean that they can't accomplish big things they will just have to take a different route to go about them. That all being said - are you ready for some BBALL? That time is here.
