Wake Forest
Dave Clawson quietly did one of the best coaching jobs in the country last year. The rest of the nation may not have known, but followers of the ACC know what a good job Clawson did. Wake Forest went 7-6 last year including a bowl win. After winning 6 games combined the previous 2 years, that was a remarkable turnaround especially in the rugged ACC Atlantic. How much of this is sustainable for the Deacs is up for debate, but they know they are capable of being a competitive credible program.
Will Go 7-5 (4-4) if:
The offense can take another leap forward. 2-3 years ago, Wake Forest had one of the worst offensive lines you’d ever seen. The couldn’t move the ball against just about anyone. Last year it wasn’t exactly prolific, but 6 times last year it scored 24 or more points. Most of the offense returns, and if the defense can be as solid as last year then a 4-0 start is possible. Wake Forest opens the season with Presbyterian, Boston College, Utah State, and Appalachian State. After that Wake Forest can steal 3 more wins somewhere along the line? They know how to win games now. That’s a lot different than years past.
Will Go 3-9 (1-7) if:
The season goes sideways early. Wake Forest’s schedule is brutal especially in October. While Wake Forest could open the season 4-0, it could easily be a 1-3 start. If that happens how will the Demon Deacons recover? October is Florida State, at Clemson, at Georgia Tech, and Louisville. Then November starts at Notre Dame. Ugh…
Wake Forest could be looking at a 1-8 start. It’s not that far fetched, if the offense doesn’t improve and the defense takes a step back.
