Virginia

It was a rough debut season for new head coach Tony Elliot. Not only did the Hoos struggle to a 3-7 (1-6) season, they had to deal with the tragic events related to the football team. It was more than any coach or team should have to ever deal with. That said Virginia found every which way to lose football games in 2022. There were close losses, there were blowouts, they lost at home, and they lost on the road. They will be dealing with roster turnover at several key positions including quarterback. It may be an uphill battle for Virginia this year.

Will Go 6-6 (4-4) if:

The defense can carry the Hoos to some unexpected wins. I think the defensive line could potentially be sneaky good. It will be experienced and there’s some talent. If you beat James Madison and William & Mary, and Tennessee is your only certain loss you can go 4-5 in the other 9 games and make a bowl. The offense won’t be lights out, but just being adequate with a decent running game could allow Virginia to find those 4 more wins. Remember in last year’s rough 3-7 year, the Hoos lost 3 games by 5 points or less. They really weren’t that far from being bowl-eligible last year.

Will Go 3-9 (1-7) if:

The schedule overwhelms Virginia. While the Hoos managed to avoid Clemson and Florida State, but the schedule is still pretty brutal. Out of conference Virginia plays Tennessee and plays on the road at Maryland. Then they go on the road to North Carolina, Miami, and Louisville. Duke should be a quality team, and we know Virginia’s record against Virginia Tech. Then you split games with Georgia Tech and Boston College and beat James Madison and William & Mary. There are so many unknowns with the roster especially on offense, it wouldn’t take much for the season to tailspin out of control.
