When was the last time Virginia had real actual legitimate optimism surrounding their football program? I’d say at least 10 years, with some of Al Groh’s better teams. Bronco Mendenhall has built Virginia into tough-nosed defensive team with a enough offense to keep teams honest. Bryce Perkins is largely regarded as the ACC’s 2nd best QB, and Bryce Hall is one of the best defensive players in all the country. It could be a special season at Virginia.
Will Go 10-2 (7-1) if:
Some offensive playmakers can fill the shoes of the departed RB Jordan Ellis and WR Olamide Zaccheaus. This is what my podcast partner @Hokiesmash_ASD said on the @KlownTimes_1906 podcast, and he’s right. That’s 2000 yards of offense that Virginia has to find replacements for. If they do Bryce Perkins could thrive at QB, and the offense will be a handful.
Virginia lost 4 games last year by 10 points or less, or they could have won 11 games last year. The Hoos close out few more games, and double digit wins is realistic. Is there anyone on their schedule other than at Notre Dame and maybe at Miami they shouldn’t be favored in?
Will Go 6-6 (3-5) if:
Virginia starts the season 2-4. It’s not out of the question. Virginia opens at Pittsburgh in a toss-up game. Then 2 weeks later there is talented but unpredictable FSU, and two weeks after that there is a game at Notre Dame then at Miami. The season could be sent sideways quickly, and at the end of the season is the game with Virginia Tech. Virginia fans know the streak well. The Hoos haven’t beat Virginia Tech since 2003. Until the Hoos get over that mental hump, can you look at that game in the pre-season as a win?
What if teams can key in on Byrce Perkins, because no other offensive playmakers emerge? The rush defense was OK, but not great last year. If it doesn’t improve, that could be trouble for Virginia.
