With a weekend at home finally, I made it a point to take in as much ACC basketball as I could. Mission accomplished.
On Sunday, Duke took home the Hall of Fame Tip-off classic despite having 6 players listed on the ACC Basketball Injury Report. Luke Kennard (24 pts, 7 rebs) and Amile Jefferson (17 pts, 15 rebs) stepped up though and led Duke to the victory.
NC State played a high scoring shootout against Creighton on Sunday night and while it was fun to watch, Mark Gottfried is going to have nightmares of the porous NC State defense. Creighton scored 1.4 points per possession on the night and totaled 112 points in their 112-94 win over the Pack. Creighton shot 48% from 3 and 69% from 2 point range. Mind you, Creighton is really good, but NC State has to be able to stay in front of someone.
Clemson had an opportunity against a decent Oklahoma team, but the Tigers lost 70-64. Jaron Blossomgame did everything he could scoring 22 points, grabbing 7 rebounds, and tossing out 4 assists. Unfortunately, everyone else combined to make just 25% of field goal attempts. In particular, two of Clemson's better shooters, Grantham (2-14) and Devoe (1-11) struggled mightily.
Back on the winning front, Wake Forest was quite impressive on Sunday. The Demon Deacons blew out a top 100 KenPom rated College of Charleston team 78-61. Bryant Crawford led a balanced scoring attack with 17 points and 6 assists. Wake has proven that not only can they put the ball in the basket, but they have several different guys that can get the job done. Keep an eye on Danny Manning's team this year and how they progress.
Virginia and FSU also had blow out wins on Sunday. The Hoos were playing without recently dismissed Austin Nichols, but had no problems beating Yale 62-38. FSU rolled past Detroit 100-71, and putting up points has been a common thread for the Noles this season. The Noles are averaging 97 points per game through their first 4 contests.
Finally, I guess we should acknowledge that BC got a win over Stony Brook. Glad that's done.
Tonight, we have 3 more matchups. NC State plays Saint Joe's in the consolation game in the US Virgin Islands, UNC gets Chaminade in the Maui Classic, and Notre Dame takes on Colorado in the Barclay Center.
