The ACC enters the 2026 season with more uncertainty than any Power Four conference. NIL dollars continue to reshape recruiting, the transfer portal has become the primary tool for filling roster holes, and several programs have made significant coaching changes. With preseason camps just weeks away, five offseason storylines stand above the rest as the conference prepares for another race to Charlotte.
1. Miami reloads after its College Football Playoff run. Mario Cristobal attacked the transfer portal once again, bringing in one of the nation's highest-rated transfer classes. According to 247Sports, Miami finished with the top-ranked ACC transfer class, adding impact players on both sides of the ball to replace NFL departures. The Hurricanes remain the team everyone is chasing after last season's playoff appearance, and expectations are as high as they've been in years. 247Sports currently ranks Miami's portal haul first in the ACC.
2. Louisville completely rebuilds its offense. Jeff Brohm has made roster turnover an annual tradition, but this offseason may be his biggest makeover yet. Louisville landed former Ohio State quarterback Lincoln Kienholz to lead the offense while adding wide receivers Tre Richardson (Vanderbilt) and Lawayne McCoy (Florida State), along with tight ends Brody Foley (Tulsa) and Justyn Reid (Tulane). On defense, the Cardinals promoted Mark Ivey and Steve Ellis to co-defensive coordinators after another strong defensive season. If the newcomers click quickly, Louisville could once again challenge for an ACC Championship berth. ESPN projects the Cardinals among the conference favorites entering the season.
3. Florida State bets heavily on transfers again. Mike Norvell responded to another disappointing season by rebuilding key positions through the portal. The Seminoles added pass rusher Rylan Kennedy from Texas A&M, linebacker Chris Jones from Southern Miss, offensive linemen Nate Pabst from Bowling Green and Xavier Chaplin from Auburn, while hoping transfer additions can stabilize both lines of scrimmage. ESPN's preseason preview notes that Florida State's ability to compete in the ACC will largely depend on how quickly those transfers develop into reliable starters.
4. Clemson embraces the portal more than ever. Dabo Swinney built his reputation by developing high school recruits, but Clemson has slowly become more willing to supplement the roster with transfers. While the Tigers remain selective compared to many ACC rivals, they added experienced portal talent to address specific needs instead of avoiding the transfer market altogether. That philosophical shift, combined with another elite recruiting class, gives Clemson a realistic opportunity to return to the top of the conference after an inconsistent 2025 campaign.
5. New faces arrive on ACC sidelines. Coaching changes continue to reshape the league. California begins a new era under Tosh Lupoi, Stanford turns to former Cardinal quarterback Tavita Pritchard, and Louisville's defensive leadership changes with Ivey and Ellis taking coordinator duties. Even programs without head coaching changes spent the offseason overhauling support staffs, recognizing that player acquisition and development now happen year-round. Combined with NIL and constant portal movement, the ACC has become a conference where offseason decisions may matter just as much as what happens on Saturdays.
