ACC Basketball Notes 10/5/2015 - Practice Begins

Practice is underway, and in some cases like Louisville we've already had a public scrimmage.  Let's take a look at a few things that are worth noting after the first weekend of college basketball.

Duke

The Blue Devils held an open practice on Friday.  The Blue Devils have 5 players in the backcourt ready to contribute while the frontcourt consists of largely unproven players.  It will be interesting to see how much time Brandon Ingram (6-9, 190 lbs) gets at the 4.  Playing Ingram at the big forward position allows Duke to get more players on the floor that can put the ball in the basket, but may adversely affect the Blue Devils ability to rebound.  During the scrimmage on Friday, Ingram played 3 initially with the White team (the starters), but did see time at the 4 as well.

Another item to watch for Duke is point guard play.  Thornton is the only natural point guard on the roster, but the freshman will still have to earn his time.  According to reports, Thornton wasn't on the first White Team, instead the point guard duties were shared by Matt Jones, Grayson Allen, and Brandon Ingram.

Louisville

Louisville got an early start on public scrimmages, with a Red/White scrimmage on Saturday afternoon. As most would expect for a scrimmage at the beginning of practice, the play was sloppy.  According to the Courier-Journal, the teams combined for 43 turnovers and shot under 40%.

Among individual performers, Anas Mahmoud played particularly well scoring double-figures in both 20 minute scrimmages.  Jaylen Johnson had a double-double in the first half with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Donovan stuffed the statsheet in the second with 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals.

FSU

No reports on FSU, but the Tomahawk Nation blog has some good stuff on the Seminoles.  In particular, how the media will get their FSU previews all wrong.

Virginia

Virginia opened practice earlier than most, how does a 6:30 AM defensive session with Tony Bennett sound?  Of course, it went pretty much as expected according to VirginiaSports.com.

Bennett liked the change in routine, too, though neither he nor his assistant coaches liked everything they saw during practice. At one point Jason Williford, a fixture on Bennett’s staff at UVA, stopped the proceedings to make his displeasure known.

“Our defense [stinks],” Williford said.

“It really does,” Bennett added.

Pittsburgh

Speaking of defense, Pitt's Jamie Dixon isn't hiding that defense is a focus for this year's team

Pitt is playing one of those top secret scrimmages against a D1 opponent in the preseason.  How top secret you ask?  They won't even name the opponent.

North Carolina

Instead of me telling you about the Heels, let's listen to Roy Williams instead as he discusses the start of practice.
