2013-2014 Duke Basketball Squad Profiles - Marshall Plumlee

MARSHALL PLUMLEE, No. 40: Plumlee is a 7-foot, 260 pound, sophomore who was Red-Shirted his Freshman year and saw his first game action last year.  He hails from Warsaw, Indiana and Christ School in North Carolina.  He is the baby-brother of former Duke standouts Miles and Mason Plumlee.

When I learned that there would be three Plumlee brothers, in homage to the unique trio, I decided to create the unique nickname “PlumTree” for them, so each and every brother has his number.  Marshall, thereby, is “PlumTree” #3.

Since coming to Duke, Marshall has also been named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll showing that he, like his brothers know what they are doing in the classroom.

Plumlee has not had much opportunity to prove his abilities after suffering a foot fracture early last year.  When he returned, he logged only 50 minutes.

It’s not expected that he will be considered a guy that will play much early on, but as every Duke fan knows, Coach K allows his players the opportunity to excel in practice, so he could see some playing time this year.

I’ve been critical of both his older brothers for their lack of toughness against bigger, tougher, more physical players.   Well, this Plumlee certainly won’t find many who are bigger than he, but it’s yet to be seen if he’s tougher than either Mason or Miles.  If he can provide hardnosed defense and rebound this season, he will fulfill the reason he was recruited.

Plumlee is Duke’s only true back to the basket player, but so far, based on what we’ve seen of him to date, it isn’t fair to suggest he will be a regular player unless he has improved a lot over the summer.
