Wake Forest makes final two for 5-star 2018 point guard

Ayo Dosunmu is down to two schools and Wake is one of them!

Wake Forest has been making an extremely hard push for 2018 5-star combo guard Ayo Dosumnu and it is paying off, as the Demon Deacons have made his final two according to Dosunmu’s official Twitter feed.

The Demon Deacons join the Illinois Fighting Illini in the showdown for the very talented guard. Dosunmu is out of Chicago, Illinois, a couple of hours away from Urbana-Champaign, where the University of Illinois is located.

Dosunmu will take his official visit to Illinois this weekend and presumably decide after it where he will attend college. While Illinois has long been a favorite for Dosunmu, Wake Forest has done an impressive job of making up ground behind the recruiting of Jamill Jones and head coach Danny Manning.

Manning was in Chicago again this weekend to visit Ayo in-home to discuss becoming a Demon Deacon.

Dosunmu is currently ranked as the 27th best player in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite, and the third best combo guard in the class of 2018.

If he does commit to Wake Forest then it would give the Demon Deacons the best recruiting class in 2018, and all but guarantee a top ten recruiting class finish after everybody else decides on their college of choice.

Currently the Demon Deacons rank 9th in the 247Sports 2018 rankings while Illinois has yet to secure a commitment for the class. The Fighting Illini whiffed on its other major targets in the past few weeks, and no longer have a leg to stand on with regards to recruiting Dosunmu to play with other elite 2018 talent.

Wake Forest obviously has two other top 70 recruits in Isaiah Mucius and Jaylen Hoard, as well as Sharone Wright, Jr. This could be a major factor in Dosunmu’s decision-making, and one I am sure Manning and Childress have repeated ad nauseum in their recruiting pitches.

Personally I believe that Wake Forest has put itself in a very good position to nab Dosunmu and make him a Demon Deacon, but it is always hard to determine where a team stands when it is going up against a state school that the player grew up in.

The combination of the uncertainty regarding Brad Underwood and potential violations stemming from the FBI probe into the NCAA (with regards to his former assistant Lamon Evans), and the lack of any 2018 players for the Fighting Illini bodes well for Wake Forest.

I could still see this one going either way, and while I am certainly biased, I think logically Wake Forest makes a lot more sense if Dosunmu wants to maximize his wins while in college and compete for a national championship.
