Game Recap

Irish ride hot three point shooting to a 2-0 start.

The Notre Dame men’s basketball team improved to 2-0 on Wednesday as the Fighting Irish took down the Seattle Redhawks 92-49. Notre Dame used a 15-2 run in the first half to propel themselves to a 31-point halftime lead. The rest, as they say, was history.

The Irish shot an impressive 44% (15-34) from three point land. The 15 threes was the most in the Mike Brey era, breaking the previous record of 14 which was set in 2008 against South Dakota. The hot shooting was a much different story from game one vs. Bryant. In that game Notre Dame shot just 18% (3-16) from beyond the arc.

The Irish had six guys in double figures, including senior V.J. Beachem and junior Bonzie Colson who paced the Irish scoring attack with 16 points each. Beachem and Colson have been a dynamite combination thus far.

In Notre Dame’s first two games the duo has combined for an average of 38.5 and have shot a combined 57% from the field. There was a big question mark of where Notre Dame would get it’s scoring after losing Demetrius Jackson and Zach Auguste, but it appears that Beachem and Colson are the two to pick up that slack.

Junior point guard Matt Farrell also had a nice game as he chipped in with 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Steve Vasturia rebounded from a poor shooting night against Bryant, as the senior poured in 13 points on an efficient 4-6 from the field and 3-4 from three.

The Irish will return to action on Friday when they take on Loyola (MD) at Purcell Pavillon. Notre Dame will look to improve to 3-0 before starting the holiday tournament portion of their schedule against Colorado next Monday in Brooklyn as part of the Legends Classic.
