BC Interruption debated the BC Basketball attendance issues. A recent survey by the NCAA showed Boston College's basketball attendance ranked 99th nationally averaging 5,548 per game in the 8,606 seat Conte Forum. My take on the attendance issue is that it all begins with the students. The students create the atmosphere in Conte Forum and the responsibility lies with them to help create that home-court advantage. There is no reason why BC shouldn't be able to easily draw 3,000-4,000 students per game. Boston College is a diverse community and the students has various interests and time conflicts, but this is a successful D-1 basketball program playing in a prominent conference and the fact that BC struggles to fill the student section on a consistent basis is a poor reflection on the school. BC has instituted a student ticket program giving them incentives to attend games, but the results have been mediocre at best.
Here are a few ideas that may help boost student attendance:
Tie Football Tickets and Basketball Tickets together
-student turnout for football has been great, so why not use the new ticket program and make it so that you must attend a certain amount of basketball games in order to get football tickets
Free student tickets to less-popular OOC games
-free tickets might draw more students who would otherwise be hesitant to attend games against weak opponents
Free Food at games
-who doesn't like a free meal?
