| | | It's been a busy weekend for me, but let's focus on ACC basketball over the past 3 days and see what stands out.
- The easiest eye-sore of the early season is FSU losing to South Alabama on Friday night. South Alabama is ranked #163 on Ken Pomeroy's rankings. You can say its early in the season, but the thing about college basketball is that a game like this will still be on their resume come NCAA tournament selection time.
- While Miami's opening night 10 point win might look OK to the casual observer, they were just up 3 points in the final minutes. The good news for the Hurricanes is that they remembered they had a big man down low. In the early part of the game, Miami was taking nearly 2/3rds of their shots from long range. After playing even with Stetson for a large part of the first half, when the Hurricanes made a concerted effort to get the ball down low to Johnson, it paid off and they took a lead by halftime. I'll be watch the 3FGA/FGA ratio all season long. Note, that Canes played without Durand Scott who is out for 3 games due to the suspension that he received at the end of last season.
- All of the triangle teams have won their games fairly easily. James Michael McAdoo has proved he is a force, and perhaps UNC's only consistent offensive threat for now. Seth Curry proved in game one that injury or not that he can still give the Blue Devils a perimeter threat. NC State was impressive in their opener, showing a combination of depth and talent that the Pack haven't shown in some time.
- Maryland also impressed on Friday night against Kentucky. After the Wildcats jumped to a double-digit lead in the first half, the Terrapins continued to fight. Alex Len showed the NBA talent that he has, and quite frankly dominated the game. Len is impressive and despite a lackluster performance from the Maryland perimeter players, the Terps had a chance to win that game.
