It's still football season and the ACC Morning Linkfest is a basketball fixture. That said there's enough news this morning for a quick linkfest.
I went to Chapel Hill last night to check out UNC play Shaw in an exhibition and its clear UNC is a team of players defining roles. Shaw actually had the lead 5 minutes into the 2nd half before UNC went on a 23-0 run. The big mistake the Heels suffered was that their poor offense affected their defense, a common mistake of a young team. Once the Heels started making a few shots, the defensive intensity picked up and led to the big run that opened the game up. While Marcus Paige struggled a bit, the other freshmen, James, Johnson, and Tokoto all played really well in their debut. James Michael McAdoo looked like the best player on the floor leading the team in scoring and rebounds.
Maryland got a bit of tough news when they learned that Dez Wells transfer waiver was denied, meaning he will have to sit out a year. With Wells Maryland could have had ACC championship dreams, without they will likely fall into the middle of the league standings. The Terps plan to appeal but you shouldn't expect much to come from that.
Virginia's point guard issues just got a little tougher as Teven Jones has been suspended for the the exhibition season and the season opener. Jones was expected to start in the place of Jontel Evans who had offseason foot surgery.
Duke opens up their exhibition season today against D-II champ Western Washington. The same team played Washington tough two nights ago, so don't be surprised to see Duke have a similar game to what UNC experienced last nght.
That's it for today, enjoy a taste of college basketball as it heats up and of course the college football today!
