Who should be ACC Basketball Coach of the Year for 2016?

This year in ACC Basketball we’ve had a number of coaches that have done a great job. I’ve narrowed down to the three that I think should be your top candidates.

LarranagaTony Bennett, Virginia

After the loss of top scorer Justin Anderson, some thought Virginia might step back a bit. That didn’t happen. The Cavaliers are in the top 10, and at 23-6 (12-5) can still tie for the ACC Regular Season Title.

They are also still in play for an NCAA Tournament #1 seed. Bennett has gotten Virginia to the point where they don’t rebuild they reload. The Cavaliers beat Villanova, West Virginia and California out of conference this year, plus they are contending for the ACC Title.

Jim Larranaga, Miami

Miami was picked to finish 5th in the pre-season, Jim Larranaga’s Miami Hurricanes are 24-5 (13-4). Miami has a chance to win the ACC Regular Title, and they are not out of the picture for an NCAA #1. The Hurricanes looked like they had a chance to be good this year, but this good? Larranaga is one of the most underrated coaches in America.

If the Canes win the ACC regular season, I’ll strongly lean toward Larranaga.

Buzz Williams, Virginia Tech #14

Anybody that followed basketball knew that Virginia Tech had made a great hire getting Buzz Williams away from Marquette. Williams inherited a mess at Virginia Tech 2 years ago, and last year won only 2 games in the ACC. This season picked to finish near the bottom of the ACC at 14th, Williams and Virginia Tech are one win from finishing 10-8 in the ACC and possibly going to the NIT.

I could see Buzz Williams winning the ACC COY title especially if the Canes or Hoos stumble late. If Virginia Tech beats Miami this weekend, Williams could very well win the award.
