Williams dazzles as Demon Deacons roll Brevard, 93-66

WINSTON-SALEM--Coron Williams scored 24 points, including 6 three-pointers to lead the Wake Forest Demon Deacons to a 93-66 exhibition victory over the Brevard Tornados at Joel Coliseum on Friday. The Deacons overcame a slow start that saw them clinging to an 18-14 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

However, after an Aaron Rountree III steal and reverse dunk,  Tyler Cavanaugh and Williams hit back-to-back shots from behind the three-point line to open up the Wake Forest lead for good. Rountree played well in place of the injured Travis McKie (ankle), as the defensive stalwart scored 8 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to go with 3 steals on the night.

Cavanaugh added 13 points of his own along with 3 rebounds in his 21 minutes of play, and helped the Deacs' pressing defense impose its will against the visitors from Brevard. Point guard Madison Jones scored 10 points and dished out 9 assists in the victory. Arnaud Adala Moto was the Deacs' leading rebounder with 10, and completed a double-double with 10 points of his own.

The story of the night, however, was Williams, who entered the game shortly after the first media timeout and immediately raised the level of intensity. Williams was clearly the vocal leader of the Deacons when he was on the floor, huddling the team during dead balls and shouting out instructions during play.

"I feel great right now," Williams said. "As a team we still have a ways to go, but we'll get better. They brought me here to bring some leadership and bring some experience and it would be selfish of me to be quiet out there. I have to let these young cats know how it is, how to play this game."

Not all was peaches and cream for the Deacons, however. Wake Forest shot a paltry 34.5% from the free throw line and gave up too many back door layups to the Tornados. Head coach Jeff Bzdelik was pleased overall with his team's effort on the evening, and praised the challenge playing a team like Brevard presents.

"It was a good way to get our feet wet, so to speak, in front of the crowd," Bzdelik said. "This was a really good team for us to play because of the way they run their offense. They're very disciplined, they're always cutting to score and they can shoot the basketball. It was good for us."

The Deacs have a week of practice ahead before tipping of the regular season with a visit from Colgate on Friday, November 8. Tip time is 7 p.m. at the Joel.
