Seth Curry Injury Could Limit Duke

There has been some speculation on message boards that Seth Curry’s mysterious leg injury is a stress fracture, but there has been nothing that I can find that can confirm that.

However, from everything Mike Krzyzewski has said about Curry’s injury it  is significant enough of a problem where the senior guard may miss parts of or at least be limited the entire season. Curry did not participate in the Blue-White scrimmage or the first exhibition game.

He saw his first action of the years last week against Winston Salem State, but was only 1-9 shooting. He was, however, much more  active than I was expecting him to be given that leg injuries typically limit mobility. That being said though, the fact that Krzyzewski has so openly said that Curry will be limited should be a cause of concern for Duke fans.

Curry, as a senior, brings experience and leadership and considering Duke was 1-17 beyond the three-point arch in their last exhibition, the Blue Devils could use his shooting.

Granted freshman guard Rasheed Sulaimon has stepped up in a big way and looks poised to be a break out star this year, he is still a true freshman. Krzyzewski has classified him as a streaky shooter and Duke definitely will require more consistency and Curry can bring that if he is healthy enough to go.

Without Curry also expect to see more combinations featuring possibly Quinn Cook and Tyler Thornton on the court at the same time. And given Alex Murphy’s guard-like skills he could even play some there in a pinch.

Duke already has some depth issues with Marshall Plumlee, Duke’s only real post player with size to spell brother Mason. Curry was expected to start but with his leg injury it appears that Sulaimon will get the nod at the shooting guard spot and if he slumps, gets hurt or he has games where he gets into foul trouble, and Curry can’t go, that spells trouble for the Blue Devils.

Krzyzewski has already said he feels the team will be much better if he can start three seniors (Curry, Mason Plumlee, Ryan Kelly), but right now it looks like he’ll have to settle for two.

Curry’s injury though remains a mystery, though everyone essentially realizes the reprocutions of not having him at full speed. Whether the rumors of a stress fracture are true or not, or if the injury is something else, I have no idea and nobody seems to be providing any more light on what his actual diagnosis is.

Through all the uncertainly surrounding Curry one thing is certain, if he is able to play and it won’t risk further injury or risk his future playing career, then he will play. The frustrating part for all of the Duke fans is the not knowing part. With a typical injury like Marshall Plumlee, you at least have a time frame to work with and expect to see him back. With Curry’s injury, though, you just don’t know and we may never know from game to game if he can go or not.

Duke will adjust as they always do in the wake of an injury, but the ceiling may have dropped a bit without Curry playing at 100 percent.
