Georgia Tech moved past a scrappy Purdue team in the Maui Classic with a 79-61 win. Javaris Crittenton took over the game for a period in the 2nd half repeatedly taking his defender on the dribble and getting to the basket. Crittenton used his NBA body at the rim to finish with 20 pts, 5 asts, and 3 stls. Lewis Clinch (14 pts), Thaddeus Young (13 pts, 10 rebs, 5 tos), and Zach Peacock (13 pts, 5 rebs) all finished in double-figures as well. In particular, Peacock was impressive as he has an adept shooting touch to go along with his bruising frame.
The Duke Blue Devils held off an experienced Air Force team to win 71-56. The Blue Devils shot nearly 80% from the floor in the first half and ultimately shot 61%. Duke made 14-17 from the free throw line and 7-13 from behind the arc. Demarcus Nelson dropped 23 pts and added 4 rebs and 3 stls, and really showed the versatility in his game. Lance Thomas showed how difficult he can be to guard, hitting the 15 foot shot, and taking his man off the dribble as well to finish with 15 pts. Josh McRoberts had another quiet scoring night, but still managed 9 pts, 8 rebs, and 6 asts.
In the final game of the night, the Maryland Terrapins beat Winthrop 71-60. Ekene Ibekwe scored 18 pts on 8-10 shooting and added 8 rebs, while Bambale Osby came off the bench to add 14 pts and 7 rebs. DJ Strawberry showed off his versatility with 11 pts, 8 rebs, 5 asts, and 5 tos. The key to the Terps win was holding Winthrop, a team that made 14 threes against UNC, to 5 for 28 from behind the arc.
