I am not sure what you can draw from this game other than the fact Idaho is not very good at football. That was sort of known prior to the Vandals showing up in Chapel Hill however, it was clearly on display for most of the game.
UNC opened up the scoring four plays into the game with Bryn Renner hitting Sean Tapley on a 36-yard touchdown pass off the flea flicker. From that point it basically rained both water and points with the Heels dropping 28 points in the first quarter and 45 for the half on the way to a 66-0 win over Idaho. The 66 points set a new UNC record for points in a game. It is also the first time in school history UNC has posted two 60+ point games
Overall it was a dominating performance. Larry Fedora's insistence on balance in the offensive attack was on full display. The Heels racked up 287 yards running the football and added 288 yards through the air. Renner had an efficient day despite throwing an INT and fumbling a handoff to A.J. Blue going 14-19 for 231 yards and three touchdowns. WR Quinshad Davis had 89 yards and two TDs to lead all receivers. The running game was handled by committee. Romar Morris led the way with 74 yards and Giovani Bernard had two carries for 70 yards. 68 of those came on one of Bernard two TD runs on the day.
As good as the offense was, it got tremendous help from both the defense and special teams. UNC forced five turnovers, four of those interceptions while pitching the second shutout of the season. On special teams UNC blocked two punts, including the second of the season by Morris who has suddenly morphed into Bruce Carter. Granted there was some ineptitude on the part of Idaho as evidenced by the one fourth down where the Vandals committed three straight penalties and actually punted twice. So yes, the defense and special teams executed fairly well but with the grain of salt that Idaho is simply a very bad football team.
Overall, UNC took care of business on a rain soaked field in front of a sparse crowd. More importantly no starters were injured in the making of this victory.
