The Elusive Butch Davis Phone Records Released

The records for Butch Davis's personal cell phone, long the great white whale of the North Carolina sports media were released on Friday, after a judge issued an order to that effect back in August. The results, as you might expect, are entirely uninteresting.

To be honest, I've long forgotten what people expected to find in them. Panicked calls to various participants on the eve of the investigation perhaps? Calls to a bank in an effort to stash heretofore unknown riches? I'm not sure. Needless to say, there is nothing of that nature. Nor are there any calls to Gary Wilchard, the late football agent involved with Marvin Austin and John Blake, or to Julian Nyang'oro, former head of the embattled African and Afro-American Studies department. Expect adjustments to Wolfpack conspiracy theories shortly.

There are, however, phone calls to tutor Jennifer Wiley, unsurprising Ashe was also tutoring Davis's son at the time. Only one call comes after the investigation began, when Wiley called Davis about her impending interview with the NCAA. According to Davis's lawyer, the conversation was brief, and he advised her to direct questions to John Blanchard, the UNC administrator in charge of the investigation. The two did not speak again.

I'd love to say this officially closes the chapter of The Butch Davis era at Carolina, but let's be honest, this is still going to absorb a great deal of attention for the foreseeable future. Reporters will continue to peruse the records, and Tar Heel fans will continue to try to move past it. As of now though, there doesn't seem to be any more shoes falling in the foreseeable future.
