After Vermont led early, Gary Williams called a timeout and stressed to his players that they must play a faster tempo, the players responded and ultimately won 81-63. From there on Maryland controlled the game, led by Mike Jones and DJ Strawberry who eached scored 19 pts. Jones, who has been labeled a scorer, showed some versatility in his game adding 5 asts, 4 rebs, and 2 stls while Strawberry added 6 stls, giving him a total of 11 in the Terrapins' first 2 games.
New Mexico transfer, Bambale Osby was the only other player in double-figures for Maryland with 11 pts. The 6'8" 250 lb power forward added 4 rebounds, and played very well putting up his numbers in just 11 minutes. Osby showed off a nice post game, hitting a couple left-handed hook shots, and crashed the boards very well.
Gary Williams used 11 players for at least 7 minutes against Vermont, but was outrebounded 49-34. About the rebounding problems, Williams had this to say, "I was not happy at halftime with the rebounding. We were outrebounded 25-to-19. We just could not get to the glass. You did not see many Maryland guys up against the offensive glass. We have to look at that and find out a better way to rebound against big people like that."
Maryland will now look to prepare for Florida A&M on Sunday (7 PM, CSN) before moving on to the semifinals of the 2K Classic a week from today.
