Maryland tipped off the basketball season last night with a 102-75 win over Hampton. The Terps were very efficient shooting the ball making 49% of their field goal attempts and 72% of their free throw attempts, although they shot poorly from behind the arc going 1-12.
DJ Strawberry led the Terps in scoring with 19 pts and added 7 rebs, 5 stls, and 3 asts. Strawberry went 7-10 from the floor and was a co-leader in field goal attempts with Mike Jones who went 6-10 and finished with 13 pts and 5 rebs. James Gist (12 pts), Greivis Vasquez (12 pts, 4 rebs, 3 asts), Parrish Brown (11 pts, 5 tos, 4 rebs), and Ekene Ibekwe (10 pts, 10 rebs) rounded out the Maryland Terrapins in double-figures.
Freshman Eric Hayes started at point guard and ended up with 2 pts, 5 asts, and 5 turnovers, but had to calm himself in his first collegiate game, "I tried to just have a calm demeanor on the court. I wanted to find the open guys. If I got open, I tried to score, but that's really all I tried to bring."
Hayes, Strawberry, Jones, Gist, and Ibekwe made up the starting lineup. Maryland now moves on in the Coaches vs Cancer classic tonight to play Vermont at 7 ET on ESPN2.
