Dave Leitao got a look at his team 2006-7 Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday night in a 78-63 exhibition win over Augusta State. The game marked the first men's basketball game in the new John Paul Jones Arena.
Adrian Joseph led the way for UVA with 17 pts and 6 rebs and 3-4 shooting from behind the arc. Sean Singletary showed no ill effects from offseason surgery, and finished with 13 pts, 8 asts, 4 rebs, and just 1 turnover. Mamade Diane (10 pts, 8 tos) and JR Reynolds (16 pts, 5 asts) rounded out the Cavaliers in double figures, while Jason Cain added a "Cain-like" 8 pts and 11 rebs. Virginia now looks forward to a Sunday matchup where Arizona comes to the new John Paul Jones Arena.
In Winston-Salem, Wake Forest held its Black/Gold scrimmage on Saturday and senior Michael Drum led the way with 18 pts and was 5-8 from three point range. Fellow senior, Kyle visser also added double figures with 13 pts, while sophomore Harvey Hale added 14 pts.
The much heralded freshman class played well also, with Anthony Gurley (15 pts), Ish Smith (7 pts, 5 asts), and Casey Crawford (11 pts) all playing well.
