Conference Schedule Analysis

With the unbalanced schedule now in conferece play it is worth taking some time to find out which teams have an advantage in their conference schedules.  I used a weighting system based on the media's predictions from Operation Basketball, where the top team, UNC, was given 1 point, Duke, 2 pts, ... all the way to NC State who received 12 pts.  Using this scoring system, we can calculate the average opponent's points for each team:

Team

Avg

North Carolina

6.94

Duke

6.25

Boston College

6.75

Georgia Tech

6.31

Florida State

6.69

Virginia Tech

6.69

Maryland

6.69

Virginia

7.25

Clemson

5.63

Wake Forest

6.50

Miami

6.19

North Carolina State

6.13

Looking at the numbers the schedules are fairly even, although it is easy to see that Clemson has the toughest conference schedule with the lowest score of 5.63.  Clemson plays Duke, BC, Georgia Tech and Florida State twice, which is 4 of the top 5 teams.  Among the easiest schedules is Virginia, who plays none of the top 5 twice.  As if North Carolina needed anymore help, the Heels have the 2nd easiest schedule.
