Virginia Hoops Late Review/Early Preview

The best way to summarize Virginia's season can be said with the sentence, "what could have been." As the season went along, the Cavs were near the top of the ACC, but injuries and defections derailed the season. By the end of the season, the Cavs played with seven players, one of whom was originally planning to redshirt. While the Cavs finished 22-10 and lost in the first (or second) round of the NCAA Tournament, there was potential for much more.

Who Stood Out: I still hold my belief that Mike Scott should have been ACC Player of the Year, but I can't change that. He did so much for the Cavs during the season. He led the team in scoring, rebounding, and shooting, and his presence on the court meant a lot to the team.. Virginia would have been a really bad team without him.

Looking Ahead: Three crucial players are gone from the squad, including Scott, Assane Sene and Sammy Zeglinski, who all graduated. Fortunately, there is a big recruiting class coming in for this season, led by Justin Anderson, who could take over as the go to guy early on. Mike Tobey is another forward with some potential who will play early on. Mike Tobey is a 6-11 center who will need to bulk up a little to play in the ACC.

Early Prediction: Virginia has had a thing with one guy doing the bulk of the scoring for the past few years. This year will be different. The scoring will be more balanced. Anderson, Joe Harris, Jontel Evans, and Malcolm Brogdon could be big contributors in the scoring department. The question is if the scoring can be consistent enough. I think it will be good enough for Virginia to finish in the middle of the ACC this season.
