Conference realignment is out of control

This conference realignment thing has gotten out of control. There's no loyalty. Cash is king. Prior rivalries are torn apart, and fans have misgivings about what actually matters more - on-field performance or how much money a team gets out of its third-tier TV games.

So let's just start over.

Why even bother having conferences as they are in the first place? Why try to maintain something that clearly no one cares about?

It's time for a college football draft. Line up the conferences, and give them picks. The SEC can pick first because they are the best, then the Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-10, ACC, Big East and others. If programs are really worth as much as they think they are, they'll get picked early.

I'd love to see a supplemental draft where certain MAC teams get a shot or Sun Belt squads are snatched up because of their upside.

We can televise it. We can get super great guest celebrities to be representatives for the individual conferences and programs. And we'll finally just settle this thing once and for all.

Imagine the fun pundits and writers would have with trying to do mock drafts for all of college football. If the ACC selects Oklahoma with pick five, which team will they get as their number two? What other factors go into this? Does academics matter even at all? Notable alumni? Location? Facilities?

The strategy of this thing is immeasurable. It would take a vision that definitely goes far beyond the capability of many conference commissioners. Trying to maintain some kind of brand, keeping rivalries and making fans care would account for an entire draft plan - one that can be completely upended if a the Big East decides it wants to let it all ride on Clemson.

This thing is getting ugly, and it's not going to stop anytime soon. Stop pretending. If it's really about money and prestige, let's prove it.

What do you think? Should we just throw all of the teams in a pit and make them find their way out instead? Maybe everyone can just cage fight.
