In Blacksburg, the Virginia Tech Hokies have found a coach to replace the recently terminated Seth Greenberg (via Jeff Goodman)

Virginia Tech has decided to bring back James Johnson.

Johnson, an assistant coach on Seth Greenberg’s staff for the past five years, will replace Greenberg as the Hokies head coach, sources told CBSSports.com.

Johnson had decided, earlier in the month, to leave for an assistant spot at Clemson with Brad Brownell.

Johnson is extremely well-liked and will also help ensure that the current players and signed recruits stay with the program.

This is a modified version of promoting the assistant coach except the assistant coach in this case left to take a job elsewhere but then came back. Making it even more interesting is that Johnson had taken a job at fellow ACC school Clemson. So, to be clear, Johnson leaves Virginia Tech, presumably because he doesn’t want to work for Greenberg anymore. Hokies' AD Jim Weaver fires Greenberg and cites the flight of assistant coaches as a primary factor then goes out and brings one of those departed assistant coaches back to be the head coach.

Similar to situation where an assistant coach is promoted, Virginia Tech is hiring Johnson to placate current players such as starting PG Erick Green and possibly keep the recruiting class intact, specifically Montrez Harrell. As with other “promote the assistant” situations, the long term success rate is very low. Johnson has zero head coaching experience and has only been an assistant either mid-major schools or BCS programs like Penn State and Virginia Tech. For the sake of Virginia Tech and also the ACC Johnson will be able to parlay success in Blacksburg where his former boss could not.

The curious news that broke last night that second team All-ACC guard Terrell Stoglin had decided to declare for the NBA Draft just beating the declaration deadline for underclassmen. Stoglin was thought to be, at best, a second round pick and the decision to declare after initially saying he would return seemed very odd. That is until this came out.

Terrell Stoglin and Mychal Parker have been suspended from the men’s basketball team for one year due to a violation of the University of Maryland Student-Athlete Code of Conduct, athletics department officials announced Monday.

Parker had already announced his intentions to transfer. Since he was going to sit a year anyway, I supposed he decided to sit said year and then play for another school. Stoglin, on the other hand, decided not sitting a year and will take his chances with the NBA Draft. While there is no official word on what Stoglin and Parker are being suspended for, there is a strong possibility it was related to multiple failed drug tests. In fact, the Washington Times Patrick Stevens tweeted that Stoglin’s suspension was tied to failed drug tests. According to Maryland policy a third failed test is a one year suspension. Since that is the case I would put Stoglin’s chances at getting drafter in a very dark and cold place.
