So Austin Rivers is Still a Blue Devil, Well Maybe

Decisions are hard but even harder when it seems someone else is making the decisions for you.  CBS Sports reported earlier today that Duke freshman Austin Rivers had decided to forgo his remaining eligibility, sign with an agent and enter the NBA Draft.  Since that report, Duke and family members of Rivers have apparently said those reports are all premature and that no decision has been made. Not too fun when others make those decisions without you even knowing.

Duke is saying that Rivers isn't likely to have a decision made until next week.

So who is right? The Duke sports information folks who typically release this kind of story when the times comes or the sources (not named of course) of CBS and or ESPN.

Both claim that Rivers went home to Orlando and is planning to make his announcement next week, but why the wait?

I've never understood the wait, unless the kid still doesn't know what he wants to do. If he happens to be sure that leaving is the right choice then why wait? Why not just go ahead and announce and be done with it?

I don't envy the decision of Rivers or his teammate Mason Plumlee who has apparently decided to potentially test the waters. Tough decisions are no fun and incredibly hard regardless of your age.

Sometimes it seems like no matter what choice you make it isn't the right one and it could take time to determine whether or not it was in fact the right choice. So when others claim they know your choices before you, it can get frustrating.

ESPN reported that Plumlee is waiting word on whether he'd be a first round pick before actually filling out the paper work. It was announced yesterday, siting sources (naturally) that Plumlee would enter the draft.

And just like Rivers there hasn't been much in the way of confirmation from Duke or Plumlee.

Both CBS and ESPN are reporting that sources (again with these mystery people) have told them that Rivers will hire an agent, effectively ending his college career. If true, the departure of Rivers will likely be greeted by Duke fans with mixed results.

Some fans don't like Rivers and would be glad to see him go, while others feel that Rivers isn't ready and would benefit by staying another year in college.

The decision certainly has ramifications for the future of the Duke program, at least for next year and until a decision is actually made and officially announced I will keep an open mind.

Personally I think that Rivers will go, and I hope that Plumlee elects to stay but my opinion doesn't really count so I'll wait for these kids to make a decision I certainly don't envy.
