Duke/FSU Box Score
Notes: FSU won the game 79-74 at the free throw line where they shot 32-40, compared to 10-17 for the Blue Devils in a game that ended in some controversy.
With 1.7 seconds remaining, Al Thornton grabbed the rebound and was fouled and at that point the crowd stormed the floor. After minutes of removing the players and assessing the situatoin, the referees gave a technical to FSU for too many players on the floor (which I found to be somewhat funny). JJ Redick was given two free throws, which cut the lead to 3. At this point, Coach K put in his second team, removing all of his starters, to avoid anyone important getting trampled. After Thornton hit his two free throws, the crowd rushed the floor again.
For FSU it was all Al Thornton and Alexander Johnson, who the Blue Devils seemingly had no answer for. Thornton finished with 26 pts and 6 rebs while Johnson had 22 pts and 13 rebs, and the two managed to foul out Duke's big men, Josh McRoberts and Shelden Williams.
For Duke, JJ Redick had 30 pts, but took almost half of Duke's shots by going 10-28 from the field. Before fouling out, Shelden Williams had 20 pts, 16 rebs, and 4 blks.
Clemson/Virginia Tech Box Score
Notes: Clemson outscored Virginia Tech 14-2 in the last 4 minutes of the game leading the Tigers to their 86-81 win. Akin Akingbala dominated in the paint with 21 pts and 16 rebs, 7 of which were on the offensive boards. Cliff Hammonds (18 pts), Shawan Robinson (17 pts, 4 asts), and Sam Perry (10 pts, 4 rebs) all added double figures in the Tigers' win.
For Virginia Tech, shooting 57% from the field just wasn't enough as they just couldn't stop Akingbala and the Tigers' shooters. Clemson finished 13-22 from behind the arc, a number the Hokies just couldn't overcome. The Hokies were led by 17 pts from Zabian Dowdell and 16 pts and 9 rebs from Coleman Collins.
Miami/Maryland Box Score
Notes: Despite 20 turnovers, Maryland hung on to beat Miami 65-61. The Terps counteracted their turnovers by being very efficient from the free throw line where they went 23-28, as compared to 8-13 for the Hurricanes. The Terps were led by 18 pts from Nik Caner-Medley and 15 pts from Mike Jones.
As with most of the season, the only 3 in double figures for Miami were their 3 guards. Robert Hite finished with 18 pts, while Guillermo Diaz had 17 pts, and Anthony Harris added 11 pts.
UNC/Virginia Box Score
Notes: UNC absolutely demolished Virginia on Wednesday night, winning 99-54. The Heels were led by David Noel, who finished with a career high 26 pts, while Tyler Hansbrough (13 pts, 8 rebs), Reyshawn Terry (17 pts, 7 rebs), and Marcus Ginyard (10 pts, 5 rebs) all added double figures. The Heels shot nearly 60% from the field and 55% from behind the arc, finishing 11-20.
Virginia was led by JR Reynolds (19 pts, 5 tos) in the loss, while Sean Singletary was the only other Cavalier in double figures with 14 pts.
The Heels of course move on to play at Duke on Saturday in a game that means nothing in the standings, but everything for fans.
