Well, that was an interesting night of basketball.
It would be predictable to start with Duke/UNC talk, and I'll get there, but let me start with the upset of the night as Boston College defeated Florida State. If you're wondering how Boston College pulled off the upset on a team that was bigger, longer, and more athletic than them, its easy to see in the box score. Boston College managed to take care of the ball (TO% of 15.8) and make the three point shot. BC took 46% of their shots from long range and made 46% of their 3 point attempts. Inside the arc BC made just 35% of their 2 point shots. That was definitely in the BC scouting report, not sure why FSU didn't do a better job of stopping it.
Speaking of 3's, lets get to Duke/UNC. Surely you've seen the coverage on ESPN, how could you have missed it? Duke got off to a hot start, UNC settled in and went on a run in the middle 20 minutes of the game. The game was played fairly even for the next 5-7 minutes and then Duke went on a run to get back in it. Then this happened...
Unbelievable, Duke wins 85-84. I surely didn't give Duke a shot to win this, but the Blue Devils relied heavily on the 3 outscoring UNC 42-3 from behind the arc to win it. Not much more I can add to this game that hasn't been said. As for Austin Rivers, I think Georgia Tech's Wes Durham said it best this morning when talking about his intestinal fortitude taking and making that last shot "I'm not sure how the kid walked out of the building with the set he has on him." Let's just leave it at that.
