GoDuke.com announced on Monday that Duke will be adding the rising sophomore to the team after he announced his transfer from Ohio State. The 6 foot 2 inch 190 pound safety is originally from Plantation, Fla. He was recruited by Ohio State, Florida State, Miami, LSU and Tennessee according to ESPN. He was also listed as a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and a four-star prospect by ESPN.
According to Ohio State's player profile page, Cash recorded 96 tackles, 23 tackles for a loss, seven sacks and five forced fumbles as a junior in high school. A knee injury forced him to miss time as a senior.
Cash saw limited time in five games this season as a true freshman, recording three tackles. He did thank former head coach Jim Tressel in his transfer announcement.
It isn't fair to speculate but I would imagine that the coaching changes not only at the top but also the addition of former North Carolina Interim Head Coach Everett Withers as co-defensive coordinator perhaps made Cash feel like he needed a change.
He is likely to fit in well at Duke who employs a 4-2-5 scheme that often requires the use of three safeties. With the loss of Matt Daniels, the Blue Devils will likely need to continue to add depth at that position.
And while Cash can't play until the 2013 season, his ability to participate and challenge other players in practice should help Duke's secondary improve.
Cash has already enrolled at Duke for the Spring Semester and will participate in spring practice which starts February 22.
