Happy Holidays, Hokies, Atlantic Coast Conference, and NCAA fans!! Wherever you are, we at SCACCHoops hope you are having a great holiday season. Today, we learned that Ty Garland is transferring from Virginia Tech to LaSalle University in Philadelphia, PA.  You can see more from Garland’s Twitter account below

Garland announced the decision via Twitter on December 16, 2011.  He did it with class.  Please see his two tweets below:

For further information, please see the Virginia Tech Athletics Department press release here.

As Hokies fans, most of us could tell that this was inevitable.  Garland, a sophomore from Philadelphia, PA, appeared in eight games this season, averaging 4.6 points per game.  For his career, Garland averaged 3.1 points over two years.  Marquis Rankin came back from an injury and Garland’s playing time diminished even further (he played one minute, combined, in Virginia Tech’s games with Minnesota, Kansas State, and St. Bonaventure… he did not suit up for the Norfolk State game).  For more, please see the good work from the Washington Post’s Hokies Journal.

Garland finished his high school career as the third leading scorer in Philadelphia Public League History, so going home to LaSalle University makes sense for him.  Plus, LaSalle runs a four-guard offense, so this might be a better fit for Garland.  Absolutely, he can get some more playing time… and he can go home to Philly.  For the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team, this means an open scholarship.   The bet here is that the Hokies will probably use the open scholarship to recruit a big man.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us at SCACCHoops!! On Twitter, you can follow SCACCHoops here and Hokie Guru here.
