Duke/Virginia Tech Box Score
Notes: Duke came out pushing the ball up and down the court and were led by a monster performance from Shelden Williams in their win over Virginia Tech 80-67. The Blue Devils came out early with their goal to push the ball and get their big men running up and down the floor. Their hope was to wear out the Virginia Tech big men in an attempt to slow down their offensive rebounding. The Blue Devils ultimately outrebounded the Hokies 37-33.
Shelden Williams led the way for Duke with 24 pts and 15 rebs, while JJ Redick also added a quiet 24 pts. Duke fans got a nice surprise in the return of Demarcus Nelson, who had 7 pts in 16 minutes of action. Josh McRoberts played well in his return to the starting lineup for Duke as well and had his best game in some time with 8 pts, 7 rebs, 4 asts, and 3 blks.
For Virginia Tech, Zabian Dowdell had a nice game, most of which were in the 2nd half when the Hokies were making a comeback. Dowdell finished with 21 pts and 4 asts, while Deron Washington finished with 12 pts and 7 rebs and Coleman Collins had 13 pts and 10 rebs.
Washington was involved in an incident where he and Lee Melchionni fell to the floor, while getting up Washington "Vicked" Melchionni right in the face, and was subsequently tossed from the game. If you are unfamiliar with the term of being "Vicked", it is a reference to former Virginia Tech quarterback, Marcus Vick, and his intentional foot stomp during a football game. Despite going to the Duke locker room with Seth Greenberg after the game, it is distinctly possible that Washington may be suspended for the Hokies' next game.
