ACC's Top-100: No. 51 James Johnson, Virginia

Number 51 on the list of the top 100 returning basketball players in the ACC is a familiar name (thanks to a former Wake Forest player) but a new face that could have a very good redshirt freshman season.

PLAYER: James Johnson
POSITION: Power Forward
TEAM: Virginia
YEAR: Freshman (Redshirt)
TAPE: 6-9, 234

2010-11 STATS: None

DEEP THOUGHTS:
It’s rare to see a freshman big man who has some resemblance of a post-game, considering most have gotten by on their size advantage in high school. Yet, that’s exactly what James Johnson was expected to deliver last year. However, Johnson decided to redshirt, forcing Cavaliers’ fans to wait one more year before seeing the goods.

In the end, it was probably a smart move. Johnson has a lot of gifts as a basketball player, but the extra year of practice and weight gain will only help him in the long run.

So what kind of tools does this kid have?

He’s a long 6-9, with surprisingly good hop. With his back to the basket, he has a handful of moves, including a hook shot. However, he prefers to play facing the basket. He can certainly handle it, capable of putting the ball on the floor for a couple of dribbles and scoring with either hand. His jumper is fine, but I wouldn’t label him lethal from outside, although he can knock down some mid-range jumpers, enough so to keep defenders honest.

More than anything, head coach Tony Bennett needs to be a back-to-the-basket post player. Long-term I see him at the four-spot, but Virginia is set their with Mike Scott and Akil Mitchell. For now he’s the primary backup to senior, Assane Sene, at the center spot.

I honestly believe Johnson has the skills and know-how to be a starter next season. Time will tell if I’m right. While I think he’s a capable defender, he doesn’t have the presence that Sene can provide in the middle.

However, if Johnson can avoid dumb fouls and control the boards, look for him to eat up plenty of minutes as a freshman.
