Clemson/Virginia Box Score
Notes: Despite turning the ball over 17 times (compared to only 8 assists), the Virginia Cavaliers beat Clemson 64-58, thanks in large part to a 33-20 rebound advantage. Adrian Joseph led the way for UVA with 19 pts, while Sean Singletary played great with 17 pts, 5 rebs, and 6 asts (although 6 turnovers). For Clemson, guards Vernon Hamilton with 13 pts and 4 asts and Cliff Hammonds with 14 pts and 4 rebs led the way. No player had more than 6 rebs for Clemson, with Akin Akingbala pulling down the 6 boards.
Miami/Maryland Box Score
Notes: Hats off to anybody who picked Miami by 14 in this game, as this was exactly the result 84-70. Miami, who came into the game at 8-6 had all of their "Lethal Weapon 3" trio score 20+ points. Guillermo Diaz had an oustanding fantasy game with 21 pts, 5 rebs, and 9 asts while both Robert Hite (22 pts, 8 rebs) and Anthony Harris (22 pts) were great as well. The Terps just couldn't defend the 3, with Miami shooting 12-19 from long range. Maryland was led by 19 pts from Nik Caner-Medley, with both DJ Strawberry (14 pts) and Travis Garrison (12 pts) being the only other players in double figures.
UNC/NC State Box Score
Notes: Once again the Tarheels surprise in a tough, heated game, beating NC State on Saturday 82-69. While NC State was the more experienced team, the Wolfpack handled end of game situations very poorly, although the UNC halfcourt defense deserves a lot of credit. Tyler Hansbrough managed to score 20 pts (and 16 rebs) despite only 6 field goal attempts. Hansbrough led an outstanding Tarheel free throw effort going 14-14 with the entire team going 26-28 from the line. The Wolfpack was also outrebounded by an amazing 45-22 effort, which is simply too many possessions to give the Tarheels in this one.
FSU/Virginia Tech Box Score
Notes: Florida State got 21 pts and 12 rebs from Al Thornton to lead them over a win of Virginia Tech 74-68. Virginia Tech was plagued with major foul trouble for most of the second half with Deron Washington, Jamon Gordon, and Zabian Dowdell getting their 4th fouls early in the half, although the Noles held a pretty comfortable lead for most of the first half. With the foul trouble of the Hokies, Wynton Witherspoon came off the bench to nearly save a Hokie win with 19 pts. Ultimately, the Hokies had no answer for Al Thornton who was just too much to stop.
