FSU Recruiting and Bowl Game Notes

This past week recruiting was pretty slow. You can even say things seemed “dead”. Well, that’s because recruiting’s “dead period” began. What this means is coaches cannot meet with the recruits in person and are limited to one phone call a week to a certain recuit. The dead period began on the 20th of December and runs through January 3rd. After the dead period will come the quiet period, where coaches can have more contact with recruits, but things are still very limited. Coaches can meet with recruits when they are on campus for their official visit. The dead period and quiet periods will alternate from now until National Signing Day, which is on Wednesday, February 2nd. This is done to the benefit of both the recruit and the coaches; this is a time for the recruit to take their final visits and some time to make their final decision. Also this gives coaches time to focus on their bowl preperations and not become too wrapped up in recruiting. With all the rules and regulations, coaches and recruits alike must be extremely careful in attempt to not make any recruiting violations and face NCAA sanctions.

While the week as a whole was very quiet as it pertains to FSU recruiting, there were a few headlines this weekend. Anthony Chickillo a 4* defensive end out of Alonso High School in Tampa, FL has stated that he will take a visit to Tallahassee sometime in January with his close firend and FSU running back commit James Wilder Jr. While Wilder has been all over Chickillo to join him in Tally, the likelihood of Chickillo signing with FSU seems like a real longshot at this point. Both Chickillo’s grandfather and father played at Miami and the consensus is that the 3rd generation standout will also end up in Coral Gables. Chickillo has committed to Miami and then de-committed after the firing of Randy Shannon, but many feel that new head coach Al Golden will be able to get Chickillo back on board at Miami. Chickillo was never a legitimate option for FSU and the visit is likely out of respect for his good friend Wilder.

Another stud defensive end, Jadeveon Clowney who is ranked as the #1 player in the country, announced that he will no longer take an official visit to FSU. Clowney who is an unbelievable talent and definitely deserving of all the accolades has had the Noles in his top five all along, but not many people believed he would venture far from home to play his college ball. The young man from South Pointe High School in Rock Hill, South Carolina, is considered a huge Gamecock lean and many expect him to choose USC on signing day. Obviously FSU fans were excited that the Noles were getting a visit from the number one player in the country, but in all honesty FSU never had a chance, so his announcing that he won’t visit Tallahassee is not surprising nor dissapointing in terms of recruiting. FSU has already assembled a great group of defensive ends this cycle and as you can read in our 2011 class projection, we feel the Noles aren’t done at the position.

Quick Hitters

- The Noles have arrived in Atlanta and begun their preparations for the Chick-fil-A Bowl against the South Carolina Gamecocks. The game will take place Friday, December 31, at 7:30pm on ABC.

- Both QB Christian Ponder and RB Jermaine Thomas are back at practice and are on pace with their recoveries from injury to play in the bowl game.

- In the coming days we will have an interview with FSU commits Bobby Hart and Rashad Greene on their friendship and their state title run this past season.

- I will leave you with a very great detailed story on the life and up-bringing of FSU signee Devonta Freeman and his Miami Central teammates. I must warn you that it is somewhat of a long read, but well worth it!
