College Football Championship Day in Review

What a championship Saturday! Sadly this weekend marks the virtual end of the regular season college football. Don't feel too bad we still have 30+ Bowl games to go. Let's take a look at what transpired today.

First off the Connecticut Huskies won the Big East when they defeated South Florida 16-13. Congratulations to the Huskies who have only been playing Division 1 football since 2000. Their kicker Dave Teggart hit a 52 yard bomb of a FG for the win. Now I'm going to be ugly. At 8-4 this is probably one of the weakest BCS team in recent memory. I hope the Orange Bowl does not take UCONN to face the ACC Champion. This matchup does nothing for the ACC, even in a win. Do the right thing Orange Bowl select Stanford.

Speaking of the ACC Champion, it's Virginia Tech just as I predicted at the start of the season. We've said it before and we'll say it again. Virginia Tech has been and remain the class and standard in the ACC. After their 44-33 win over Florida State they are headed to the Orange Bowl, where I hope to gosh they play Stanford and not UCONN. Are my feelings clear enough about this?

Let's head to Big 12, where Oklahoma spotted Nebraska 17 points, but still won 23-20. I think it would have left a bad taste in everyone's mouth but Nebraska's fans if the Cornhuskers had won the Big 12, since they are leaving for the Big 10. Bob Stoops is still one of the best coaches in the business and winning the Big 12 proves it. They'll go the Fiesta Bowl to likely play UCONN or Stanford. Stanford would be a fun game. UCONN would be either a disastrous loss or meaningless win. I'm just not giving UCONN any respect. Hey Husky fans don't worry about what I say or anyone one else, you don't have to apologize for anything.

Lastly Auburn destroyed and I mean destroyed South Carolina 56-17 in the SEC Title game. Simply put this might have been one of the most impressive performances of the season. It's up there with TCU's 47-7 win at Utah and Oregon's 52-31 win over Stanford after falling behind 21-3. Cam Newton was  unreal throwing for 335 yards and 4 TDs. If Auburn can beat Oregon in the national title game, you have to put him in the ratified air of the Vince Young's and Tim Tebow's as the best college football player of the last 10 years. As good as he is, he has to win a national title, to be in their class.

Stayed tuned as I'll take a look at the bowl games after they get announced Sunday.
