Each year I keep hoping an ACC Champion will emerge that the rest of country will respect, and each year we get a Champion that's gets scrutinized nationally after bowl season if not before. In recent years the ACC Champion has done it self no favors by being a BCS Bust. You can't exactly hang your hat on a 2008 Virginia Tech win over Cincinnati in the Orange Bowl.
In no way should a conference winner apologize for winning the ACC, but it's a tough sell to the rest of the nation that we've got a worthy champion.
Who are the contenders for the conference championship?
Virginia Tech: Have looked great the last few weeks, and gave Boise St. their toughest game, but they lost to FCS school James Madison. I read one place that Michigan beat Florida the same year they lost to Appalachian St. remember that? Not really I remember the loss.
Miami: Lost by nearly 30 at home to Florida State and were only marginally competitive at Ohio State. The U is only kind of back.
Georgia Tech: Not likely they win the ACC, but I list them because it's mathematically possible, and they've got a loss to Kansas! That's arguably worse than James Madison. Well not really but not by much.
North Carolina: The Heels need more crazy stuff to happen than Georgia Tech. If it did happen you'd have 3 loss or more team, and one under NCAA investigation.
Florida State: Blown out at Oklahoma, and Championship teams don't fumble away wins like they did Thursday night at NC State.
Clemson: The Tigers actually don't have any embarrassing losses, but they've already lost 3 times, and even if they run the table in the ACC, still have to play South Carolina. A 3 - 4 loss conference still doesn't look very impressive.
NC State: Great quarterback in Russel Wilson, but there's that loss to East Carolina.
Maryland: Yes they can win the ACC, but the team I saw lose 31-7 to Clemson, would get crushed by any other BCS team.
It's not easy defending the ACC to your other major conference friends. The conference is not giving us much to work with, but there's still time. Some season ending games like Clemson\South Carolina, Florida St\Florida, and Georgia Tech\Georgia, plus the bowl season may garner some respect.
As ACC fans we got to keep hoping someone will break through. If not there's still basketball season!
