We are halfway through the College Football. It goes fast doesn't it?
Let's give out our ACC mid-season awards and give predictions for the 2nd half of the season.
Best Team - Florida State Seminoles
It's been a long time since the Noles were in this position. Outside of the loss at Oklahoma, Florida State's closest game has been a 20 point win at Virginia. That's 1996esgue. The offense is ranked #2 in the ACC, but the surprise is the defense is also ranked #2 in the ACC. FSU is off to a quick 5-1 start and 3-0 in the ACC.
Most Surprising Team - North Carolina State Wolfpack
NC State came into the season as darkhorse ACC Atlantic contender at best. Tom O'Brien needed a good season in order restore the Wolfpack's fans faith in him. All the Pack has done has raced out to 5-1 record. The offense is the ACC's best, and Russell Wilson is making a case for ACC Player of the year. LB Nate Irving has been all over the field.
Most Disappointing Team - Boston College Eagles
Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech have had some disappointing moments, but you got the feeling they'd recover, and they have. Boston College doesn't appear to have anything going for them. They are last in the ACC in scoring and in total offense. They are averaging 10 points a game in their last 3 outings, and the quarterback situation is a mess. The Eagles have soft backend schedule, but it may not matter. This season might be the first since 2000 they don't win at least 8 games.
Offensive Player of the first half. - Russell Wilson NC State
Wilson leads the ACC and is 5th in the nation in total offense. Any questions?
Defensive Player of the first half. - Da'Quan Bowers Clemson
Several players have had solid defensive first half's, but it's hard name one person that's been spectacular. Bowers gets the edge over BC's Luke Kuechly, because of his ACC leading sacks and tackles for losses. Bowers is finally approaching the potential he came to Clemson with.
Team with the most to prove - Clemson Tigers
A hallmark of the Clemson Tiger's during the Tommy Bowden years was the inconsistency. The Tigers would look fantastic one minute and terrible the next. This year is the same. The first half at Auburn was as good as any ACC team I've seen play for straight 2 quarters. The Tigers went on to lose that game and 2 more after that. Dabo Swinney and Clemson have issues at wide receiver and linebacker, but a 2-3 team this should not be.
Your ACC Championship Mathcup - Florida State vs Virginia
Tech
With everything that's happened during the 1st half in the ACC of schedule the Championship game still looks like Florida State and Virginia Tech. FSU has a tricky road game at NC State, but other than that they get everyone else minus Maryland at home.
Virginia Tech had one awful game against James Madison, but they also are the only team that's given Boise St. a game in to the final minutes. They've won 4 games in a row and don't leave Blacksburg until Nov 13. Back to Back road games at UNC and Miami will be tough, but they'll only need a split to win the Coastal.
ACC Champion - Florida State Seminoles
Jimbo Fisher makes Nole fans forget about Bobby Bowden with an Orange Bowl appearance. They get Florida in Tallahassee too.
