The Duke Blue Devils scored their #1 target from the 2011 recruiting class last night as Austin talked to his Dad, Doc, for about an hour and then called up Duke Assistant Coach Chris Collins who was watching Austin work out earlier that day. While the rest of the recruiting world was gearing up to hear the news from Austin’s anticipated official visit to UNC-CH, the Rivers family was settling in to the realization that they had found their new family in Durham, NC.
Duke needs Austin as much as Austin needs Duke, and both sides clearly let each other know that throughout the recruiting process. While any of the three schools Austin was considering, UNC, Kansas, and Duke, would have given him a platform to showcase his amazing basketball skills, it was the intangibles that led Rivers to the defending national champions:
“It’s Duke,” he said. “It’s where geniuses go. Duke is something that stretches far beyond basketball. That’s something I can learn while I’m there. A lot of those kids are going to be millionaires when they grow up. It will be a good program to be a part of.”
