I don't even know where to begin with Saturday's ACC football action. By the end of the day Virginia Tech has lost 21-16 to James Madison. Georgia Tech lost 28-25 to Kansas. Florida State was defeated 47-17 by Oklahoma. Boston College struggled with Kent State, but won 26-13. Miami competed with Ohio State sort of. They went down 36-24 to the Buckeyes in Columbus.
Jacory Harris still throws lots of interceptions though.
Clemson beat Presbyterian 58-21 and you bet I’ll take it! NC State had the best win of the day 28-21 at Central Florida and Maryland routed Morgan State 62-3.
What in the name of Bobby Bowden is going on? This isn't about stats or game analysis. This is about the embarrassment that's become ACC football just two weeks into the season.
Trying to rationalize what's going is tough. Florida State was terrible on defense last year, so should we really have thought they were going be good in one year? Miami is playing a team that could end up the national title game. No one really expected a win there, but they still have time to make a game of it.
The Georgia Tech loss at Kansas makes more sense after seeing the game. The Jackets just are not very good. Without RB Jonathan Dwyer and specifically WR Demaryius Thomas they've become a one trick pony. If Josh Nesbitt doesn't make a play it isn't going to happen. The defense is still struggling adjusting to Al Groh's 3-4 defense and lacked talent to start with.
I still never expected a to lose to team that had an 8 game losing streak going.
I don't have any explanation for Virginia Tech losing to James Madison. At home with that talented backfield and the Hokies laid a monsterous egg. I refuse to believe that FCS school James Madison's talent level is anywhere near Virginia Tech's, but a rebuilt defense and inconsistent offense couldn't get it done. Must have been a Boise St. hangover I guess.
What I found particularly upsetting in the Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech games is that the effort and intensity just didn't appear in either team. That's is very strange for Frank Beamer and Paul Johnson coached squads. At the moment the ACC isn't good enough to overlook any opponent they play.
I'll update this article as the day continues, but right now it looks like Black Saturday for the ACC. When does basketball season start?
